Tankless Water Heaters

Why a Tankless Water Heater?

  • A tankless water heater will save on energy dollars over a standard tank style water heater
  • It will take up much less space than a tank style unit
  • You will enjoy almost an endless supply of hot water
  • Most tankless water heaters qualify for Federal tax savings

Is a Tankless Water Heater the Right Choice for You?

Things to consider before installing a Tankless Water Heater:

  • A tankless water heater will not work with most plastic water pipes such as c.p.v.c. or p.v.c. pipes. These can be identified by markings on the pipe or a yellow, brownish, white or off white color. Plastic pipes, such as a Pex Pipe (Wirsbo or Veiga), are acceptable to use. Copper or steel are best to use.
  • A tankless water heater is not to be confused with instantaneous or on–demand water heaters. It simply is a water heater without a tank.
  • A tankless water heater, because it has no storage tank, will slow the flow of hot water to your home. Because our ground water in the Pacific Northwest is much colder than other parts of the country, you will realize about 4 gallons per minute of hot water flow with a tankless water heater. By comparison, a tank type water heater will produce about 8 gallons per minute, or more. This means you will be able to use about two hot water fixtures at a time. For example: a shower and laundry; or a shower and a dishwasher.
  • Note – If you have a high flow shower head such as a rain shower, or a full body wash, or a similar style high flow shower, a tankless water heater will be hard–pressed to give you the performance you expect.
  • A tankless water heater also needs power to run. We will provide a cord with the unit, and plug it into an existing receptacle. It is recommended that it be wired to a dedicated circuit from your electric panel, this is not included in our normal installations, but can be done as an option while we are on site.
  • If we are relocating the water heater to another area of the home from its old location, please be aware that this will increase the distance that the hot water needs to travel to get to your home’s hot water fixtures, thus it will take a little longer than you are used to, for hot water to travel.
  • We also need to be certain that your gas piping will handle the added load of a tankless water heater. This may require upsizing your gas piping system, or even may require upgrading your gas service or propane tank at additional cost. A tankless water heater will use up to 180,000 BTU’s of gas, whereas a standard gas water heater uses approximately 40,000 BTU’s.
  • Because the tankless unit is fired by gas, we will need to vent it to the outside, it can not be vented into a steel vent that your old water heater uses. So we will need to vent it outside accordingly, which may require some carpentry repairs after the installation, which is not included with our install.
  • If you currently have a hot water recirculation system, it will not work with a tankless water heater. To recirculate water, you still would need a small storage tank, which may defeat the purpose of a tankless water heater.
